Record label ~scape has been unearthing the latest underground sounds in futuristic dub, jazzy electronica and experimental hiphop since its founding in 1999 by Barbara Presisnger and musician, DJ, remixer and producer, Stefan Betke (otherwise known as Pole). The latter arrives in Japan at the end of this month with labelmate Jan Jelinek for "~scape Japan Tour 2006."

The label's reputation was built on early releases by the likes of minimalist dub practitioner Burnt Friedman and the "Staedtizism" compilations which also showcased non-~scape techno artists like Thomas Fehlmann and To Roccoco Rot.

"~scape Japan Tour 2006" sees Pole take a step out from behind his laptop to see his stark dub, hip-hop and electronica fleshed out by guitars and live drums.

Also accompanied by a live band will be cut 'n' paste ~scape cohort Jan Jelinek, whose recorded output of abstract dub has included the sampling of free jazz outfit Sun Ra and crooner Bryan Ferry.

"~scape Japan Tour 2006" featuring Pole and Jan Jelinek runs Jan. 24 at Shibuya Lush (6.30 p.m., solo shows); Jan. 26 at Club Metro, Kyoto (8 p.m.); Jan. 27 at Bessie Hall, Sapporo (8 p.m.); and Jan. 28 at Daikanyama Unit (11 p.m.). Tickets are available from Ticket PIA.
