The Siena Wind Orchestra will perform a memorial concert for Albert Reed on Jan. 22 at Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall, conducted by Seikyo Kim. New York-born Reed (1921-2005) was one of the most prolific and frequently performed composers, with over 250 published works for wind ensembles, chorus and chamber ensembles and orchestras. Reed's compositions are particularly revered in Japan, a country he visited on nearly 50 occasions as a guest conductor.
The Siena Wind Orchestra is one of Japan's most established wind orchestras and has performed on television since its inception in 1990. Last year, the orchestra's recordings appeared on a CD.
For this concert, the orchestra will perform several of Reed's best-known compositions, including "El Camino Real," "The Hounds of Spring" and "Armenian Dances: Part 1" (completed by Reed in 1972). In the latter, Reed captured the various tempos and subtleties of the long-standing Armenian folk tradition based on five folk songs by Gomidas Vartabed, often credited as being the founder of Armenian classical music through his work in preserving and documenting thousands of Armenia's folk songs.
