The emotion-filled voice and calmly pulsing guitar of Brazilian diva Joyce appeals to a broad spectrum of listeners. Unlike some performers with a strong international following, though, she draws fans by upholding authentic values. This week she brings her distinctive Brazilian music to Tokyo and Yokohama this week.
Since her first release in 1968, Joyce has been regularly touring the world, showcasing the pliant rhythms and tender lyricism of bossa nova. In concert, she conveys a charismatic presence with a distinctively feminine point of view. Her lyrics, like her singing and playing, emerge naturally from her soul and have deep roots in Brazilian tradition. And while she is a purist, she has also embraced the new trends of electric bossa.
Often, Joyce tours alone, or with one other guitarist, but for this tour she will bring piano, bass, drums and her longtime collaborator, guitarist, singer and songwriter Dori Caymmi. Caymmi deserves a tour of his own as one of the prime forces in Brazilian music. He has composed, arranged and performed with not only Brazilian stars but on the international scene as well. The band will propel her rich vocals all the more strongly.
The combination is a powerful one that fans of Brazilian music should not miss. Her way of conveying saudade, the wistful acceptance of the sadness of life at the core of Brazilian music, is an entrancing experience.
