Several years ago, Harvie S. made the switch from a career as in-demand straight jazz bassist to playing Latin jazz exclusively. This high-energy live recording shows he made the right decision. Having long backed leaders such as Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval and Chico O'Farrill, Harvie S. has Latin experience to burn alongside his highly polished jazz chops.
And burn it he does. This outstanding Latin jazz sextet takes off from the first note and never slows down. On all originals and one Thelonius Monk tune, Harvie S. keeps his sextet moving tightly and flexibly through intricate rhythmic styles.
Though each tune stays in the Cuban rhythm of clave, the jazz sentiments flow just as easily. Though Harvie S. sprinkles a few pensive moments through the CD, a bass solo on "Monk's Mood" and calm soloing match-ups here and there, most tunes deliver the goods with passionate and lively Latin tempos.
On every cut, the musicians show off their considerable talents with great solos, but also take hold of the rhythms and drive them forward as a group. The band's pleasure in playing this music is evident everywhere. "Texas Rumba" has an incomparable sense of vibrancy and musical joy.
