As their legend grows, it becomes more and more natural to recite the tale of S.U.N. Project in storybook form, which might go something like this:
Once upon a time, three German heavy metal rockers took a vacation in Goa, India. During their holiday, Matthias, Marco and McCoy heard the most incredible music while going from one party to the next. The hard-hitting trance that developed in Goa was stuck in their heads when they returned to their homes and day jobs back in Hamburg. One day a few years later they started making electronic music together, while keeping core elements of their heavy metal sound. They became an overnight success and now travel the world wearing alien masks, making rocky trance and spinning off side acts.
Which is mostly true. But S.U.N. Project -- Matthias Rumoeller on guitar, Marco Menichelli, formerly on bass-guitar and now on synthesizer, and the drummer McCoy -- is one of those cool success stories that often get embellished as the story is told again and again. The most common misstatement is: "They used to be a heavy metal band."
