Concert Preview by SIMON BARTZ The day I almost joined The Sherbets was three years back when I stumbled upon my pal Kenichi Nakata in an Ebisu bar. His group was hunched around a table in serious conversation, but he pulled up a chair for me and said, "Meet Benzie, the singer of Blankey Jet City. He's hired me as bassist for his new band." I didn't know Nakata even played bass, he was just the barkeep who mixed up triple-strength G&Ts.
"Can I be in the band?" I asked Kenichi Asai ("Benzie" to his mates) drunkenly. He shrugged his shoulders, "Maybe. What do you play?" "Errr, nothing. But I can sing."
Later, at a party, I slipped the Sex Pistols on, Asai and I got carried away with our pogoing, and before you knew it, we were rolling on the floor trying to beat the crap out of each other.
