The first solo exhibition in Japan by print artist Sean Caulfield is currently on show at Session House Garden in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward.
"Reservoir" (2000), etching and mezzotint, by Sean Caulfield |
Born in the United States, Caulfield, 34, studied printmaking at the University of Alberta, where he now works as a teacher.
Although this is his first solo show, he is no stranger to Japan, having taken part in other art events here, including the 21st Century Grand Prix Exhibition, in which he won grand prize, the annual Kanagawa International Print Exhibition in 1996 and the group exhibition "Remembered Image" at the Canadian Embassy Gallery in Tokyo in 1999.
Proficient in etching, lithograph and silk-screen techniques, Caulfield focuses on such themes as "space and flatness" and "consciousness and intuitive thought" in his work.
He mixes traditional techniques with original -- often humorous -- ideas, making both colorful and monotone prints. Much of his work is a mixture of the abstract and figurative.
This exhibition, supported by the Canadian Embassy, introduces 25 works.
