Fukumoto, a textile artist who works with indigo dyes, is highly regarded both in Japan and abroad for her skilled use of traditional techniques to express a modern, individual sensibility.
Originally a student of Western-style art at Kyoto City University of Arts, Fukumoto switched to indigo dyeing after visiting New Guinea for research and being struck by the beauty of the dyed cloth created by local artisans.
Since then, she has exhibited her designs in Europe and the United States, and won a number of prizes for the originality of her work.
Thirty works (including one 6 meters long), which aim to capture the magnificence of the universe in cloth, are on display at the exhibition.
