The NHK Symphony Orchestra is known to millions for its regular nationwide radio and television broadcasts, and to thousands for its concerts in NHK Hall, Suntory Hall and elsewhere around the country.
Germany offers an interesting comparison. The land of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms does not have any cities with as many symphony orchestras as Tokyo's nine (Berlin has six; Munich five). The German people do have symphonic riches on the national airwaves, though.
Hundreds of broadcast concerts are presented annually by more than a dozen orchestras in Baden-Baden, Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Kaiserslautern, Leipzig, Munich, Saarbrucken and Stuttgart.
