This month the Nagoya Players will present four performances of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest," to mark the company's 25th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of the playwright's death.
A nonprofit theater company composed of both foreign residents and Japanese, the Nagoya Players have been entertaining audiences in Nagoya with a wide variety of English-language plays since 1975. The group was founded by English professor Michael Horne as a way to provide live English-language theater for his students.
"The Importance of Being Earnest," Wilde's masterpiece and best known play, explores the dynamics of aristocracy, money, love and marriage in Victorian England.
Performances will be held on June 17, 2 and 7 p.m., and June 18, 2 and 6 p.m. Tickets are available in advance for 1,800 yen for students and 2,000 yen for adults; and at the door for 2,000 yen and 2,500 yen respectively.
