If you want to learn more about the shakuhachi and various performance techniques, observe a variety of instruments for sale and hear a selection of original pieces played by young performers, then I recommend the Senshu Kobo Sunday Clinic and Open Lesson.
Shakuhachi performer and maker Yukihiko Mitsuka and his group, TONE, will sponsor this all-day event, taking place in front of Komae Station on the Odakyu Line.
Since all shakuhachi are essentially handmade, each instrument varies and there is no standard. Often the peculiarities of an individual instrument do not suit the player, or there are small imperfections in the instrument's structure. These problems are solvable, however. The clinic offers free advice on how to alter or fix the shakuhachi. They will also undertake repair jobs.
