Death. We don't like it, but sooner or later we all have to face it. British photographer Cesca Sims, however, has been looking it straight in the eye (through the lens of her camera) ever since she began shooting. Her first major exhibition was set in Canterbury Prison, Kent, and narrated by snippets from the letters of Ron Shamburger, a prisoner on death row in Texas.
"Everyone makes mistakes. There are too many mistakes in the world," says Sims of her motivation. "It's like the nun who wrote 'Dead Man Walking' said, 'People are better than their worst mistake.' I just don't think anyone has the right to take others' lives."
She has been corresponding with Shamburger for over four years, visiting him on death row three times. She describes him as "normal," "educated" and "blindingly good at cross-stitch."
