It was Feb. 24 when an exhausted Hannah Chambers packed her bags and quit her job for the second time in as many years. Within 72 hours, she’d be in Japan.
But, that morning, tanks rolled into Ukraine. Russian airspace closed, and the door to Japan, Chambers’ dream destination since high school, slammed shut for the fourth time.
She had landed a place on the government-run Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme, which recruits native English speakers to teach at Japanese public schools. Yet, almost two years to the day since her acceptance, she was still in England.
