There's nothing wrong with the comment. It's been taken out of context. In Japanese, "kikai" means machine or opportunity. Women are our only opportunity for society to grow.

It is ridiculous that he hasn't been fired. Surprisingly, an NHK poll showed that most people didn't feel he should resign. I think perhaps some older men in Japan share Yanagisawa's view.

Women are much more than baby-machines. Society starts from women. However, I don't think Yanagisawa should resign. He should apologize, and modify his view.

He has made a fool of women. To encourage families to have more children, maternity rights must be improved and the government needs to ensure companies follow the rules.

The comment represents the older-male view that women should stay at home and look after the children. Someone in his position should take more care when choosing his words.

The comment was completely offensive. Yanagisawa should resign and take this antiquated view with him. They need to put someone forward-thinking in office.
