A gaggle of students leaving Cosmopolitan Consultancy in Kawasaki's Shin-Yurigaoka point the way to the front door. "Up, up," they urge, to the third floor, where Suzan Matkin awaits with slippers and English tea.

CC is no ordinary English language learning institution. Rather it concentrates on using English to introduce and explain other cultures to Japan.

As Suzan explains: "We call this a study center rather than a school. We've covered some 80 countries, using native teachers and speakers, but all through English."
