Foreign residents to get free advice on problems: A free information and counseling service for foreign residents will be provided between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on June 29 at International House Osaka, in the city's Tennoji Ward.
Specialists will offer advice on problems that non-Japanese residents often face, including those pertaining to laws, human rights, immigration, employment, education, medical care and taxes. Interpreters will be available for speakers of Chinese, English, Indonesian, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese. Reservations are not required. The advice will be given in strict confidence and, if requested, visitors will not have to give their names.
The venue is a six-minute walk from Uehonmachi station on the Kintetsu Line and a 10-minute walk from Tanimachi 9-chome station on the subway Tanimachi or Sennichimae lines.

Children invited to paint picture of their family: The British Council's Kyoto office is inviting children between the ages of 5 and 15 to take part in a painting competition from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 29 at its offices in Nakagyo Ward.
Participants will paint a picture on the theme "A Portrait of My Family."
Six of the best works will win prizes, while three will be selected to be sent to London. Twelve paintings will then be chosen from among works submitted by children from all over the world and be printed in the organization's calendar for 2004, which will be available at its offices in 109 countries.
Participants must bring crayons, pencils or paints. Paper will be provided. Participation is free, but reservations are required in advance.
The Kyoto office is also planning a session to introduce its English-language courses for children aged 6 through elementary school between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on July 3. Demonstration lessons will be offered for students at various levels.

Breast cancer advances addressed at university: Osaka University's Genome Information Research Center is organizing its monthly English-language seminar for the public between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on July 5 at its facility on the university's campus in Suita, Osaka Prefecture.
Dr. Susan Suarez, a visiting professor at Osaka University, will speak on the theme "Breast cancer: Advances in the gentle battle." Approximately one in 10 women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lifetime, but recent improvements in early detection and treatment have dramatically improved survival rates and the quality of life for people with the disease. At the seminar, Dr. Suarez will discuss the procedures from detection to treatment.
Participation is free, but reservations should be made by July 3.

Kansai cuisine on menu at Hilton cooking class: Kobe Cross Cultural Center is hosting a cooking class featuring food from the Kansai region at 10:30 a.m. on July 14 at the Hilton Hotel Osaka, in the city's Kita Ward.
Bruno Malzacher, the hotel's executive chef, will demonstrate Western-style cuisine inspired by the concept of Slow Food, an international movement dedicated to protecting traditional local cuisine against the dominance of fast food, which is standardized in taste and ingredients.
The ingredients to be used in the class include black rice and several vegetables from Kyoto Prefecture, chicken from Hyogo Prefecture, figs from Wakayama Prefecture and white gourds from Ishikawa Prefecture.
Participation costs 3,990 yen, which includes the recipe and lunch. Reservations must be made in advance and there are only 30 places available.
