Make a note of Sunday, March 9, for WomenFest 2003, an annual event designed to showcase female talent in celebration of International Women's Day.
WomenFest was originally created in 1998 by Helen Northeast, who continues to produce this event each year. "I wanted to do something that would mark International Women's Day and be a celebration of women performers here in Tokyo. "Often there is little opportunity for women performers to find a venue and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity."
Northeast, who is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, wanted to focus not just on music, but also the disciplines comedy and dance. "Every year I try to introduce new talent, along with some favorite repeat performers, and it's always a very warm and responsive audience."
She says it's a not a women only event, and men also perform, but are in supporting roles as the main focus lies on the female talent.
"Every year's show has had a unique character, and I'm sure this year's event will be equally enjoyable." Already lined up to perform at WomenFest 2003 is the taiko drumming group Akaoni Daiko, Sachiho Otsuka playing cello with guitar accompaniment, and comedy from stand up comediennes Spring Day and Jackie Beebe.
There will be Thai dance from Ami, music from Ryo, Chu and Friends and Lenne Hardt Jazz, comedy and improv from the Tokyo Comedy Store, modern dance from Asami, rock with the band Northeast, and a finale with Gearl Jam.
TV host and narrator Vicki Glass will act as emcee.
