Andrew McIntosh Patrick has a strong sense of history. He lives in a terrace row (derelict before British Heritage came to the rescue) dated 1728. Benjamin Franklin's house is just doors away, being transformed into a museum. And all in the shadow of London's Charing Cross Station.

Andrew is managing director of the Fine Art Society, located in Bond Street. "I'm only the fifth to hold the position since FAS was founded in 1876. We're in the same building too, celebrating our 125th birthday just last year."

He is also an avid collector. Which is why he was in Japan in late April, seeing items loaned to a museum in Fukushima Prefecture in situ. This landmark exhibition will come to Tokyo on May 25, and then move on to Toyama and Tochigi. For the first time, Japan can see the work of the world's first industrial designer, Christopher Dresser.
