From earliest times, when the country was known as Akitsushima (Island of the Dragonfly), insects have buzzed, skimmed and flitted through the pages of Japanese literature.
As far back as the seventh century, Emperor Jomei wrote: "Over the broad earth, smoke mist hovers. Over the broad water, sea gulls hover. Beautiful, my country, my Yamato, Island of the Dragonfly."
