After a grueling week at the office, we naturally look forward to getting outand about on the weekend. For diversions, Japan's major cities have it all, from art exhibitions and the latest movies to shopping and sporting events. Problem is, who wants to fight thesame workday-commute crowds at museums, theaters and other venues?
The solution? Get out of town and head for the great outdoors. With the Golden Week holidays approaching, now is the perfect time to start planning a great escape. For the next few months, weather conditions are optimal: In spring and early summer, widely considered Japan's mostpleasant seasons, temperatures are warm during the day but humidity levels remain low.
The good news for city dwellers isthat there are plenty of scenic sites only a few hours away -- even from big cities like Tokyo and Osaka. The Rokko Mountains (less than an hour from Osaka) and the Okutama area (around an hour and a half from central Tokyo) are conveniently located for day-hikes and also offer plenty of opportunities for longer treks and camping.
