There's a sliding glass door inside Keiko Torigoe's new house in Suginami Ward, Tokyo, that rattles when opened, and it took a lot of time and energy to make it that way.
Torigoe, an expert on the art of soundscape, says she suffered great emotional pain when her old house, built in the early 20th century, was demolished for construction of the new one.
"I thought if I could reproduce the sound of the sliding door from the old house, which I used to hear all the time, I would be able to feel positive about the new house," says Torigoe. "I did not know at the time that my simple wish would involve such hard work."
