Japanese names at the Paris men's collections these days are rather thin on the ground -- at the most recent presentations, for autumn/winter 2001/02, only four Tokyo designers showed.
Naoki Takizawa absconded to Milan in 1997 with the Issey Miyake Men brand, and Kenzo Takada, after over two decades in Paris, is arguably more French than Japanese: besides, his Kenzo Homme line has been designed by Roy Krejberg since 1999. Masaki Matsushima also gave the collections a miss this time around.
At Comme des Garcons, however, designer Rei Kawakubo continued her journey through uncharted territory, producing designs light years away from the original Comme line, which debuted in the early '80s.
