"Sky Concert: The World Fireworks Grand Prix," an international fireworks competition which took place last month in Yokohama, was a rare opportunity to view cutting-edge displays from some of the world's best pyrotechnic artists.
In contrast to traditional Japanese firework events, which focus on a succession of single fireworks representing different shapes in an artistic manner, the show was a dynamic display of visual effects synchronized to music using advanced computer technology.
Representing Australia was Syd Howard Fireworks International, a company that attracted world attention at the Sydney Olympics with its innovative show at the Opera House. Its most fascinating display used fireworks in all the colors of the rainbow fired in a lively rhythm.
Ricardo Caballer S.A. represented Spain. With the theme "Spanish Visions," the company amazed the audience with its elaborate stage effects harmonized to music from famous operas and musicals. The highlight was a UFO that rotated, displaying gold and silver colors.
The design was totally new to Japan and will probably be a popular addition to firework events next year around the country.
From Canada was renowned Performance Pyrotechnic Associates. Creating world-class images accompanied by fast-paced swing music, it displayed hearts which changed seamlessly into pinwheels and blinking stars. The finale was a series of spectacular bursts which filled the sky with color and sound.
Every year one country is nominated as a noncompetition guest exhibitor and kicks off the event with a special fireworks display. This year Japan, represented by the country's premier fireworks company, Marutamaya, fulfilled this role. Its performance combined careful execution with artistic skill.
