It's common knowledge that a large proportion of Japanese traveling abroad these days are young single women. They usually have decent-paying jobs, live rent-free with their parents and spend their salaries as they please. Well aware of this phenomenon, the travel industry has geared some advertisements specifically toward these girls on the go. It's not unusual to see ads featuring one or two attractive women lounging somewhere on a tropical beach, without a man in sight.
Alas, sooner or later the holiday ends, and the women must return to their jobs and start saving up for their next adventure. There is, however, another way to satisfy wanderlust -- and get paid for it.
Cruise ships offer great opportunities to make a living and see the world. Any position available at a fine hotel can also be found aboard a luxury liner. There is also an ongoing need for production show staff, tour planners and arts and crafts teachers. Though these jobs are not permanent (cruises last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months), the benefits usually outweigh the drawbacks.
