Three cheers for Australia — really and literally.
Last week, the Canberra government completed an impressive trifecta of diplomatic achievements, concluding agreements with three South Pacific states. Those deals reflect the laser focus the Australian government is devoting to its closest neighbors and a bureaucratic reorganization that translates that intent into action. It’s an impressive effort and the results are worth studying and emulating.
The first deal was struck in May, when the government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that it would provide 113 million Australian dollars ($75 million) for projects in Tuvalu, among them an undersea telecommunications cable, climate adaption and establishing a national security coordination center for the country.
