Children’s poor educational test scores are a major cause for concern across the world. Outcomes plummeted nearly everywhere during the COVID-19 pandemic — but even before then, standardized test result measures in mathematics, science and reading were already heading in the wrong direction.
A focus on education unites parents across the world, although the challenges differ greatly. Standards in the United States and other parts of the rich world are stagnating at relatively high levels, whereas many children in the poorer half of the globe struggle even with reading a simple sentence or doing basic math.
But after years of implementation, it has become clear which educational policies do not work at all — despite them having loud backers.
