Donald Trump built his fortune and legacy in New York. And now New York has told him he needs to leave for a few years — and forfeit at least $355 million on his way out the door.
Arthur Engoron, a New York judge, levied the fine and the timeout in his final 92-page ruling in a civil fraud case that New York Attorney General Letitia James filed against the former president in 2022. James accused Trump of falsely inflating the value of his holdings to deceive lenders, and Engoron agreed.
Trump has assets he can sell to pay the financial penalty, but it will strain his available cash reserves. He has already been ordered to pay the writer E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million after being found guilty of sexually abusing and defaming her.
