U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Monday threatened to slap China, Mexico and Canada — the United States’ three largest trading partners — with hefty tariffs, in his first specific remarks on measures that are likely to raise eyebrows worldwide amid growing fears of a global trade war.
Trump said that he would impose an additional 10% measure on China on top of existing tariffs, while also putting a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, until they cracked down on illicit drugs and illegal immigration into the U.S.
Writing on his Truth Social account, Trump said he had had “many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs ... being sent into the United States” — specifically mentioning fentanyl — but said his efforts had amounted to little.
