Alphabet’s Google launched its standalone generative artificial intelligence app, Gemini, on the App Store for iPhone users Thursday.

Previously, iOS users were only able to access Gemini by navigating through the main Google app or a web browser.

Positioned as Google's answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT — which has approximately 250 million weekly users — Gemini aims to tap into Apple's vast user base to expand its footprint in a rapidly evolving AI landscape.

The app, available in 30 languages including Japanese, supports text and voice prompts and can generate responses in various formats, including images. Users can also integrate Gemini with Google services such as Google Maps, Google Drive, and Gmail, though it still lacks access to non-Google apps.

The app’s standout feature, Gemini Live, enables natural voice interactions similar to ChatGPT’s voice mode. It offers 10 distinct voice types in over 10 languages — Japanese included — with plans to broaden the range in the future.

“It’s great for when you want to practice for an upcoming interview, ask for advice on things to do in a new city, or brainstorm and develop creative ideas,” said Brian Marquardt, senior director of product management at Google and head of Gemini Experiences.

By making Gemini available on the App Store, “iPhone users can enjoy a more streamlined Gemini experience, with easy access to features that help improve learning, creativity, and productivity,” Marquardt added.

The release follows a June announcement that OpenAI and Apple had teamed up to integrate ChatGPT into Apple’s ecosystem, allowing users to leverage the AI chatbot's image and document understanding capabilities without toggling between apps.
