The Japanese market for secondhand items is expanding amid growing use of flea market apps and other services.

The trend is seen as friendly to consumers and the environment, but it can have the undesirable consequence of pushing down the country's gross domestic product, one of the most closely watched economic indicators.

According to the Cabinet Office, the value of domestic consumption of used goods rose from ¥3.2 trillion in 2010 to ¥6.2 trillion in 2022.
