The deficit in Japan's balance of payments in digital services continues to expand steadily.

The structure of Japan's current account balance is undergoing "historic transformation," in the words of a senior official from the Finance Ministry, signaling a need for a fundamental reassessment of the nation's earning capacity.

According to the ministry, the trade balance related to digital services encompasses copyright usage fees, trade in communications, computers and information services, and specialized and management consulting services. It includes fees for utilizing cloud-based email and social media services as well as data storage services and transactions associated with search engines and internet advertising.
