Toyota Motor was ramping production back up at its Japan-based factories Wednesday after a computer system processing orders for vehicle parts broke down Tuesday, forcing the closure of 14 assembly plants.
The 14 factories are slated to resume operations by the end of Wednesday.
The disruption shut down a system at the core of Toyota's lean manufacturing process, an approach that reduces inventory and maximizes production efficiency pioneered by the Japanese automaker and widely adopted by its rivals.
