Hong Kong’s restaurants are reshaping their supply chains after the government banned seafood from parts of Japan, bringing the financial hub’s curbs more in line with Beijing despite scientific reassurances the products are safe to eat.
Beijing said Thursday it would "comprehensively” suspend seafood imports from Japan in response to the start of the release of treated wastewater into the ocean from the wrecked Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant the same day.
China already bans seafood imports from 10 Japanese prefectures. The Hong Kong government this week announced a ban on seafood imports from those same prefectures, four of which are landlocked. Violations of the ban are punishable by up to a year in jail.
