Tokyo police arrested a 58-year-old man on Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a woman believed to be his wife at a supermarket in the city of Kiyose in Tokyo.

Police received an emergency call at around 10:40 a.m. Sunday reporting that a person had been attacked with a knife.

The woman was taken to the hospital unconscious and later confirmed dead, according to police.

Police arrested Takayuki Kanezawa, whose address and occupation are unknown, on the spot. He is suspected of stabbing the woman in the abdomen and arm inside a women's restroom on the third floor of the Seiyu supermarket.

At the site of the incident, investigators discovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack. The two are believed to have visited the store together.

He reportedly told police that he stabbed his wife for reasons related to financial troubles.
