The opposition camp formally requested Wednesday that the Lower House speaker convene an extraordinary Diet session, demanding that the government disclose information about the recently struck Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade deal, while also providing opportunities to hear the policies of newly appointed Cabinet members
A total of 125 Lower House members from five opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Japan and Ishin no To (Japan Innovation Party), filed the request. The move fulfilled a condition stipulated in the Constitution required to demand the Cabinet convene an extraordinary Diet session.
Article 53 of the Constitution says that when a quarter or more of the total members of either House demands an extraordinary Diet session be held, the Cabinet must determine such a convocation. The Lower House has 480 seats.
