A fire broke out Tuesday afternoon at a warehouse inside the Atsugi Naval Air Facility in Ayase, Kanagawa Prefecture, but no casualties or damage to aircraft were reported, the Defense Agency said.
The Maritime Self-Defense Force's J-202 terminal caught fire at 2:42 p.m. It was brought under control by evening, officials at the agency said, adding that the cause of the fire was still unknown.
The 4,000-sq.-meter building, dubbed the "YS-terminal," was built in 1943 and has been partly used as an air terminal for transport and logistics flights between MSDF bases in Japan.
Eleven fire trucks — three from the MSDF, two from the U.S. Navy and seven from Ayase Fire Station — had been mobilized as of 4:10 p.m, the agency said. The base is jointly used by the MSDF and the U.S. Navy.
