Toward the end of Atarashii Gakko!’s set at this year’s Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, group member Suzuka, playing off the excitement of the crowd, jumped off stage and ran into the barricade holding attendees back.
“Barcelona! Primavera!” she shouts as those around her bopped along to the beat of “Nainainai.” Someone holds out a hat, which she snagged and wore. She then refused to leave the stage and, in what seemed like an homage to James Brown, she was covered with a cape before breaking free and continuing to rap. She left the stage eventually.
“When we perform abroad, we always make sure to have fun,” Suzuka tells The Japan Times over a video call from a Spanish hotel room days before the set. “We also recognize we have a big chance, we have the chance to introduce foreign fans to Japanese culture. And deliver energy to them.”
